National Democracy Challenge

  • The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Rick Mercer and George Stroumboulopoulos form the judging panel for the third annual National Democracy Challenge.
  • Young Canadians aged 14 to 30 are invited to Show & Tell: Democracy in Action through videos, images or writing. The submission deadline is November 16, 2013.
  • Contestants will win prizes for the best submissions in each category. Winners will be announced in March 2014 and will receive the following in these categories:

      • 1st Place – Four-day trip for two to Niagara Falls to attend the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' 2014 Annual Conference
      • 2nd Place – 32GB Apple iPad (with Smart Cover)
      • 3rd Place – $200 Best Buy gift card
    • IMAGE
      • 1st Place – 16GB Apple iPhone
      • 2nd Place – GoPro Hero3 camera
      • 3rd Place – $200 Best Buy gift card
      • 1st Place – 128GB 11" MacBook Air laptop
      • 2nd Place – 64GB Kobo Arc and $100 Chapters gift card
      • 3rd Place – $200 Best Buy gift card
  • Forum for Young Canadians is providing a bursary for one student from the secondary school or Cégep with the most Challenge entries. The student will travel to Ottawa to attend Forum's week-long civic education program.
  • The Federation of Canadian Municipalities is sponsoring the first place prize for Best Video –
    a four-day civic education trip for two to Niagara Falls to attend the Federation's 2014 Annual Conference and Trade Show. This is a great opportunity to connect with community leaders from across Canada and learn about important national policy issues affecting our cities.
  • The National Democracy Challenge is run by Elections Canada. It is part of Canada's Democracy Week, an Elections Canada civic education initiative taking place from September 16 to 23, 2013.
