UN International Day of Democracy

Canada's Democracy Week is inspired by the United Nations' International Day of Democracy. In 2007, the UN General Assembly marked September 15 of each year as a day to celebrate democracy around the world. The UN also encouraged governments to strengthen their national programs devoted to promoting democracy.

The International Day of Democracy celebrates the benefits that democracy has brought to people around the globe and provides an opportunity to examine the state of democracy in its many forms worldwide.

Democracy is as much a process as a goal. Only with the full participation and support of the international community, national governing bodies, civil society and individuals can the ideal of democracy be made into a reality to be enjoyed by everyone, everywhere.
